Inspired by the "V" hand sign for peace, the Bonobo Peace Sign is a "vis-à-vis" hand sign using two letter P's from the American Manual Alphabet.Unlike the V peace sign, the Bonobo Peace Sign requires two people to execute, and can be used as a greeting. The "P" may stand for the word peace, the two "P's" perhaps indicating an elevated level of peace; i.e., "peace squared" or a bilateral peace agreement.
In addition, the two P's are the initials of "Pan paniscus," the scientific name for the bonobo, which is the peaceful cousin of the aggressive common chimpanzee. Unlike chimps, bonobos solve their problems by having sex. Because the Bonobo Peace Sign is a hand sign, it can also be used to communicate with great apes.
The Bonobo Peace Sign was created for the "Re-Imagined Peace Sign" project, part of Brian Lehrer's "End of War" series on WNYC.
